Best language and translation apps
2016.01.28

The world is a big place, full of people who speak hundreds of different languages so if you need to speak to someone in China, but only know English, you might run into a few problems. There are a couple of options available to you when it comes to communicating in a language you don't know - learn it, or translate it into the language you do understand.

We have rounded up some of the best language and translation apps we have come across. So whether you want to talk to a relative in Sweden, or a business acquisition in Germany, these apps will help you learn the lingo over time or for those in more of a rush, give you a quick translation.

Duolingo is for those that want to learn a new language rather than just translate it. Languages available include Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish and English.

It teaches you in bite-sized lessons and you'll earn points for correct answers, racing against the clock and going up a level. Best thing about this app - it's all free.

Similar to Duolingo, Babbel is all about helping you learn a new language rather than just translate text. There are 14 languages available to learn with this app including French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch and Indonesian.

Lessons are used to teach you and you'll learn useful words and phrases almost straight away, while speech recognition is on board to help with your pronunciation.
